We have said several times that the tracker is essential to how the addon works. If we always drew everything on the map/minimap, the addon would make the game extremely laggy. We have tried this before and what is probably the best example to illustrate this, is picking up the Stranglethorn page quests, track them all and see what happens to your FPS. I have a pretty decent computer and it will drop me from 200 to 25fps.
On top of that, there is the arrow, which requires the tracker. There is/was more functionality planned for it too, like some menus on the tracker and slash commands which are half-implemented. But all of us are taking a break as of right now, from lack of motivation to personal reasons.
One example of this is, that the tracker always sorts quests in the order of closest to furthest. You may not have noticed this. There is already a slash command in place that allows the tracker to display distance to each quest right next to the quest text. Things like locking the tracker, different sorting algorithms, making it clickthrough etc were all planned.
If or when development picks back up again, there might be an option to hide the tracker temporarily, but it will never be removed.
