I also got hacked (Djseppelx, pvp server), yesterday around 17:00. I happened to be on at the time, and after 3 DCs after another I realized that this was not just an ordinary server issue. I spam-connected to my account in order to buy time while I did the password reset, and I managed to buy enough time to ONLY lose my 1270 gold. I shut the hacker out before he could vendor my items and bank...

Needless to say, seeing the #NostPolicy (actually I think it's great you enforce your rules harshly, but I feel this to be a different case aswell) I decided to not report this (like other people in this thread have suggested, since after all, gold is only gold, and my character is what actually is of value).

Your rules stipulate that any lost gold or items will not be replaced under any circumstances, and FINE, I can deal with that if you really must, but we need higher security than what currently exists.

For the record, I had no kronos account, I have not downloaded any addon in the past 6 months at the very least, and I am very PC-smart. Fucking hell I'm doing a masters in comp. sci. Couldn't actually believe my eyes when I saw someone had gained access to my account.

Edit: I don't entirely know the technology behind an authenticator, but I would be willing to devote time and effort to help develop an app for smartphones that could act as one if this is of any interest to the staff.

Edit #2: I also know the names of more people that don't want to speak about this openly.

Well, statistically speaking, if our raiding team is anything to go by, almost 1 in 10 of our players got hacked during the past week. Assuming it's an issue affecting the entire server and not just Brilliance and that there are 20k accounts regularly active, I'm guessing 2k players were hacked during the past 5 days.
Luckily for us, if the goldsellers continue to hack new accounts at this rate, there will be no players left to sell the hacked gold to and thus the insentive for hacking stops. I guess? Surely there's some kind of natural saturation here.
But for the sake of the trend, let's assume the hacking continues at this rate. In two months there will be no players left on Nost. Obviously, that's hyperbolized and will hopefully never be a reality, but as my initial post stated: people are getting hacked left and right.
As said, I'm sure there's some saturation thing in this. If the demand for bought gold (which I assume is the incentive for hacking accounts) decreases, the number of hacked accounts will too. That's assuming this whole account-compromisation spree isn't the result of some security breach, which could be the case, I guess.

We need a stronger defense. We're investing serious hours in this game and frankly I'm terrified of losing my character, just like that.

I might be overthinking this, and some people will probably think I do...

But it looks to me as if they only target highly geared people with a (probably) large sum of gold that would never be interested in buying gold anyway. All the people I know that got hacked are veterans of the server with very solid accounts. By accessing accounts one by one they keep their profile somewhat low while still bringing in mad cash, enough to bring in plenty of money on the black market. Yes, gold selling is happening on nost, whether you believe it or not.

Hence why this is not a "hot topic" yet.

Interesting.

This wave of hacks could explain the spam we got today in game from goldsellers using level 21 toons bragging they have got over 12,000 gold in stock.

"I'm in ur account shardin' ur purplez"

Somehow I doubt that all of the ppl in the OP might have been idiots who didn't know the basics about PC's.

The going rate according to the ads I see (the same ads I mentioned in my post above, the goldsellers are still spamming atm, they have been at it since the morning EU time) is $15 per 100g, so 12000 gold would be $1800.

That's a lot of money, esp if you are living in a Third World country such as China or The Philippines.

This seems like an issue I hope the Nostarlius team will recognize as a real threat. Several others are, by the looks of it, affected by this, well, breach. I don't think it's your typical, random hacker who's at it, since they indeed seem to target wealthy and longterm players who "wouln't give their password to their mother if her life depend on it".

I am not sure of the number that was lost from one of our players that has been hacked, but he was one of the first to craft Arcanite Reaper on this server(when nothing else was out there), and made money ever since. We're talking about thousands of gold from just one individual, surely this must be traceable?

His cause might be lost due to stupid ruels, but please, save the rest of the playerbase. They even learned disenchanting to disenchant the very last drop of his gear. Imagaine this to be your account.

Way over 100+ days played just.. vanished. Forever, as it is now.

My account was hacked and because of it being "compromised," the GMs banned it permanently.. What the fuck is that..

That sounds to me like kicking on someone who has already been beaten to the ground.. I believe a change in rules is needed in order to make people come forward with this, seeminly large, number of account intrusions. But if you get banned for telling the Nostarlius crew that you are a victim of account hijacking, I'm afraid this issue will never be solved. One can only hope that they will start to take this matter more serious, and realise it will do more good than damage to restore atleast something for the people exposed to this.

Can you guys ban these people and help guys, who got hacked?

Maybe invent a payment-method, where someone can pay $$ for restoring his account, then there is no reason like "we are working". Yes you are, and you are doing a wonderful job on Nostalrius, but what's wrong with gaining some extra money for solving account issues? :-)

Regards.

If you were banned because your account was hacked by gold seller I think you should have the chance to try to recover it with a password reset. Nothing sadder than seeing some-ones lvl 60 in Ironforge advertising gold.

Can these hacks be traced to anything?

Nost team has said it numerous times: they dont want to make any payment services regarding the server to avoid legal disputes with blizzard. Its incredibly easy for blizzard to shut the servers if they find out someone is "profiting" of their property. In my opinion something needs to be done with both the hacking spree and the rules regarding account compromising and item restoration since as of now the server is on a crash course to total chaos.
