I don't mind the leveling grind as a warrior. Mostly I ride instances up while tanking and questing in between. I have always found it to be a fun leveling experience, a little more diverse than some classes. As long as you keep your weapon up to date and your gear within 5 levels I've found its easy as pie. Feels like more of an investment when you get the ball rolling smoothly :)

Thanks again for all the replies!

Disregard what others are doing, and do what you want to do. :D

Yeah-keeping your weapon as current as you can is a big thing. Have to echo that. It's worth putting a few silver toward, IMO. Saves you pain in the long run. Look for green weapons of the Bear or Tiger first, followed by Boar or Gorilla in a pinch. Preferably if you get lucky and get a deal on a like-level Blue 2H you'll have hit the jackpot.

Usually I level as mostly Arms, with Cruelty from Fury and Parry(which is in Arms), and then at higher levels I fill out some of the Prot tree(Anticipation, Toughness, shield spec, etc. While leveling IMO, these aren't as huge.)

Big two hander as up to date as you can. Other armor-don't be afraid to wear leather and mail while leveling in the world-this is Vanilla, some excellent warrior gear before tier is actually leather/mail.

When tanking in groups while leveling I always swap to sword and board(always, never 2H tank)and try to wear plate for this(leather/mail isn't too hot on defense though there were a couple of famous mail pieces with + defense. i wouldn't tank in leather though, myself. Mail is it up to 40, after 40 I try to tank in as much plate I can. Endgame you'll be tanking in proper plate. It's just while soloing, I opt for more speed and take whatever gives me more offensive bonuses.)

Take stacks of up to date food and bandages along too. it's a big help. I also try to keep some healing pots on hand for those surprise adds.

A gun or bow helps pulling. No need to get a quiver IMO, just dump a couple hundred ammo/arrows into your bag and equip them(quivers add ranged attack speed but that's a hunter thing.)

I only want to focus one toon and would really like it to be a warrior. Are my concerns justified or am I being a worry wart?

If this is anything like the PVP server, 99.9999999% of those Warriors will delude themselves into thinking they're entitled to DPS 100% of the time and can't tank SM because they're not Prot and/or didn't purchase Taunt or Sunder Armour, etc.

You'll be fine. Just keep tank gear and tank shit as Arms while you level.

Thanks again for all the advice, but I have one more question!

I've done some research and there is a lot of talk about how getting a raid spot as a tank is about as difficult as getting a raid spot as a warrior DPS, because of the sheer numbers of warriors, people finally succumbing to their warrior's destiny as a tank and guilds hand picking their tanks before anything else.

Is this true? Am I going to be a 5/10 man tank only? Or does the advice you all gave above apply to raiding as well? I have an odd schedule and raiding is possible but perhaps on more of a casual basis, unless I can find a early/mid morning server time raid guild... I know there is usually a lot of competition for MT, but how goes the life of a casual tank? I suppose I will always have pugs? I know I am a very good tank, and if it comes down to proving my worth I know I could do it. But as a casual I might have a harder road ahead.

I'd love to play as i like :) But I could really use some piece of mind, even if it isn't what i want to hear.

Rule of thumb:
- Too few tanks for 5 mans, too many for raids -

If you are a good tank and don't mind switching to dps if its asked of you, then you most likely get a spot somewhere. Just be flexible.

You might not be #1-2 but its totally possible to be 3-5. People get burnt out on vanilla raiding pretty quick, so in the long run you never know if youre consistent. The thing about getting a spot is obviously getting bis pre raid, it costs a lot of gold, in the 800-1000g range w/ stockade shoulders, stonegrip gloves, marshal neck, and boots of avoidance. That's really the hard part. After that im pretty sure any guild that sees your gear and you guildless will be beating at your door.

A guy told me that the paladin cant tank in vanilla. Is it true? And if its true, why is there the protection tree? What use it has?
