I'm looking to reroll PVE mostly because the constant ganking is simply making the game unfun for me. Oh sure, I could put up with it and get to level 60 eventually (I reached level 32 before getting sick of it and stopping) but the whole ride would be miserable. And I don't play games to be miserable.
I used to actually like playing on a pvp server. This was back in the BC days of retail. I was enamored with the idea of having fights with other players happen spontaneously. But as time went on, I just got disillusioned with the whole thing.
The biggest problem with world pvp in WoW has always been the ability for high-level players to gank low level players without repercussion. 60 players have nothing to fear from anyone even a couple of levels lower, nevermind differences over 10 levels. The only reason to go around killing lowbies is to be a dick. There is no tangible reward, and no challenge. It's just pure douchbaggery that people get off on. And it happens all over the place on pvp servers outside of any contested zone. It's not even like you can realistically get help from friendly level 60's unless you get one to follow you around everywhere (which is kinda wasting their time) since said gankers usually run at the first sign of actual resistance. It's basically a case of internet trolling where the troll actually has an impact on your own activities, and it's infuriating.
Even in the ideal scenario of world pvp, a lot of it is more dependent upon elements outside of skill. Who strikes first, who has more friends, who is currently preoccupied with mobs, who has better gear, or even who is playing with a class advantage. The first three in particular are damning to me. I don't feel accomplished killing a player who's grossly outnumbered I just feel like an inevitability has occurred. Likewise, there's no glory in killing a player who's lost most of their health from a hard fight.
Some people defend world pvp solely on the basis that it's World of WARcraft, and that taking the war out of the game is diminishing it. My counterargument is that world pvp doesn't reflect war in the slightest. We don't take orders from higher ups (aside from a few really strict guilds), we don't take land, we don't target supply lines, we don't have coordinated maneuvers, we don't even have any kind of real win scenario in the grand scheme of things. I'd argue that the battlegrounds actually better represent the war side of World of Warcraft. World pvp is more like World of Wildwestcraft, except people don't value their own lives since they are effectively immortal, and some people are gods compared to others. Now that I think of it, world pvp is like some kind of surreal purgatory of players being dicks to eachother for little to no reason and finding excuses as to why it's perfectly ok.
Damn I got ranty, and I haven't even touched on some other issues, but I think I'll just end it here.
