Tank: Horde or Alliance?

by Hrolfr » Mon Jan 18, 2016 2:02 am

TLDR: Is there an over supply of 5man tanks on horde? Would I be better served rolling alliance when my primary goal is to tank 5mans both leveling and at 60 as a casual NA warrior playing CST?

Dungeons are my favorite part of WoW, and I love to tank. I leveled a tauren warrior to 60 in vanilla, and then in TBC I started over on a new server and again leveled a tauren warrior to 70, tanking all the way as much as possible. With family/work demands now, when I found this server I thought I should play something maybe more casual friendly. I got a warlock into the 20's, but missed tanking. I thought maybe a druid would be a good compromise, and got one of those into the 20's, but it still wasn't right. So I started over again as a tauren warrior and am in the mid 20's now. It is perfect, except it seems like there are a lot of tanks on the horde side.

In horde world chat, it seems more common for groups to be looking for a healer or dps than for a tank. My concern is that I'm not going to be able to find groups as tank. With limited play time, on the days when I do have enough time to run an instance, I want to be able to find or put together a group quickly. Would I be better off playing alliance for grouping purposes?

I would really prefer to play horde. I love the look of tauren warriors, and I think the alliance side all looks kind of meh. Plus, I've rerolled a couple times already and my tauren warrior now has herb/alch/fishing/cooking/FA all in the 125+ range. I don't relish the idea of starting over again. However, I'd much rather reroll now than when I'm 30,40,50, etc and can't ever seem to find a group to run an instance as the tank. I've run WC and SFK once each. I would have done them more, but I haven't been able to get together a group quick enough to leave me enough time to actually run the dungeon.

I'm a NA player on CST. It also concerns me than on the guild forums, most of the horde guilds seem to be Euro. I didn't get into raiding until TBC the first time around, but I'd like to do vanilla raiding here eventually. It seems like alliance might present more opportunities?

Are 5man tanks on horde more in demand than my experiences would indicate? Is demand for 5man tanks on alliance any better?

Create a toon on both factions. watch chat, take a look at the toons around you. Refer to viewtopic.php?f=71&t=24560 and http://realmplayers.com/GuildList.aspx?realm=NBE for hard numbers and cross reference your online experience with those numbers.

Boom.

Tanks are in high demand for Horde. Yesterday evening 4 groups were searching for a tank (Strat, Scholo, LBRS). I gave up after 1.5 hours

No, there is an insanely high demand for 5man tanks on horde. Pretty much for every group the tank slot fills last. I'm not exaggerating, it really is like that.

I understand your frustration with lack of groups for low lvl instances during the hours you play. If you find a healer buddy I think it shouldn't take too long to fill the DPS slots though. Getting a perfect group composition might be tough but IMO doing dungeons with weird compositions can be fun and challenging.
