Would lowering graphics settings reduce server lag?

by PharstÅr » Thu Mar 10, 2016 10:58 pm

I always thought graphics settings were FPS and personal hardware related but I was wondering if lowering graphics settings would reduce "server" lag. My ISP gives ~90mbps down and 12 upload speed and it's hardline cable so client side I should be good. Not sure here, any tech heads offer any thoughts?

Lowering graphics settings will not reduce "server lag" or latency. That is the time it takes the information from your client to reach the server. You could have a 1 gig bit line and still have over 100ms. Light can travel only so fast. If you are on the western hemisphere, you physically cannot have lower than 100ms. Some places up to 200. This is due to the hardware limitations of the transatlantic/pacific telecommunications line. Google it if you want to know more of why you cannot reduce your ms due to this limit. The Wikipedia page for it is very informative.

No, FPS is your frames per second and does not affect your latency on any level and graphical settings truly only dictate what your frame right might be. The reason you might be having latency issues is because the server is hosted in Eastern Europe.

Can we start a petition for upgrading the transatlantic line?

We would need to petition making a cable to send light faster than a fibre cable sending up to 4TB/s... that is the fastest trans line put down so far... 80ms from NY to London... I think we would have to bend light itself to move faster than that O.o

If I am not mistaken, things like sight distance actually do matter, because your client has to get info about players near to you. And if I remember right, you were able to see from LM to BS in arathi basin on retail back in the days, but you aren't able to do so here, so they already changed something, which is really annoying in my eyes. Excuses if I'm wrong :P

We have a dynamic view distance implemented on the PvP realm. At times of heavy load, the view distance is curtailed to improve server performance. The clustering system should fix this issue.
