Every server had the same rules. Perhaps your server may have been backwards.

Edit: I'm well aware this is pre-TBC. I didn't imply this rules only exist during specific expansions lol. These rules have been around for about 8 years, they wont revert back because its a private server.

Has been for 8 years... huh http://mmorpg-info.org/misc/need-vs-greed/ post from 2008.... above is wowwiki on the subject which is updated pretty frequently... what time-space were you in where need meant greed?

Quote from the 2008 forum post:
One person with flawed logic can ruin the system for everyone. They choose need for everything, convinced they are in the right. No, they can’t actually use the armor but they could sell it – and they NEED the cash for upgrades, seeing as the upgrades they want aren’t dropping for them. This type of person doesn’t appear to comprehend that they are making a mockery of the system – if ability to sell an item counts for need, then there is never a reason to choose greed. In addition, I’ve met a few who despite rolling need on every drop somehow believed that if something dropped that was a direct upgrade, the rest of the group would pass. Well, no, not really.

Then go ahead and greed while everyone else chooses need. Just because the system intended it to be one way, doesn't mean the playerbase will abide by it. Doesn't change the fact that my experience has always shown that you need valuables, greed trash. And obviously blizzard changed the system to prevent this continuing which ended up resulting in the disappointing individual loot system.

Honestly I don't find people greeding rare BoEs to be such an implausible thing as you make it sound. I actually see that happening fairly often. Maybe it's your own doing that you push this douchy attitude and people reciprocate in kind.

There is no reason not to need on rare Boes.

The logic behind this is simple.

BOE's have literally the same value for everyone since they can be exchanged for something equal regardless of who can use it. So the argument that "Its a 2 hander you can't use, and therefore shouldn't roll" is flawed and anyone who says that is greedy and hypocritical or just dumb and doesn't get it.

Here's a complex diagram to illustrate the point:

BERT GERS A WIAZARD HAT DOESNT COST AS MUCH AS A MACE!!!!!1!!!!!!

The value is the same because you'd have gold leftover then.

I wouldn´t for my life do an instance with someone thinking like that.
Does anybody really think if some great healer cloth item dropped, the warrior should get it?
If we did dm and q for tank sword dropped, the priest should roll need?
What´s wrong with you?
