Releasing Source Code & Setup Info

by drabus » Thu Apr 07, 2016 12:35 am

First off, I'm crushed that the server is going away. It is truly a sad day.

In the message, it included the statement: "However, we will still be publicly providing everything needed in order to setup your own “Nostalrius” if you are willing to. Today is also the day where Nostalrius will start being community-driven in the truest sense of the word, as we will be releasing the source code, and anonymized players data (encrypting personal account data), so the community as a whole will decide the form of the future of Nostalrius."

While I do not have the resources to meet this mission, I would like to setup a test server to get smarter about how these work. So how would I get started in doing so?

Best wishes and thanks in advance.

Hi,

If you just want to experiment with running your own server, for yourself/friends. Then you should look at the pages for the main server projects.

Mangos (Vanilla - Cataclysm): https://www.getmangos.eu/downloads/
cMangos (Vanilla - Cataclysm): http://cmangos.net/
TrinityCore: (Wrath/WoD): https://trinitycore.atlassian.net/wiki

They should have guides on the pages on how to set these up and what you need to download to do so.

If you specifically want to run a local server that runs like Nostalrius, you'll need to wait until if/when they release their modified sources and try to work with that.
Casual and proud.

Thanks Rooty - I guess that was my question, has their modified source code been released at this point. I guess the answer is no and I'll continue to watch and wait.

Thanks again!

For all people hunting down the "Magical Source Code" :

Please realize, that without a full-time and top quality dedication that Nost team was providing it is "just a few more lines of code added to mangos project".
Especially with "Setup Info".
Thats hilarious.

No it is not. do not mistake maintenance with scripting and DB modifications/data tunning.

Do not mistake maintenance with stable maintenance and project management, when it's just impossible to accomplish such kind of task solo.

Scripting / DB modification / tuning / optimizing / coding or whatever - is developing.

Considering that topic starter wants "setup info" you can definitely say that repos mentioned above is already a good point to start experimenting / learning.

Nostalrius' team fixed and brought a lot of stuff into mangos project, without a doubt, however if you are not running a massively populated server you don't even need most of this stuff, because 5man dungeons and 95% of quests are working fine in mangos; what's not the case with raids, optimization, pathing and such kind of things.

Cheers

because 5man dungeons and 95% of quests are working fine in mangos; what's not the case with raids, optimization, pathing and such kind of things.

then again, they are not.
if you think so, just look at the amount of them still bugged in the other legacy servers with mobs hopping around or quest items spawn because the npc that should drop them is bugged, etc....
there was a point for why this project got the success it had.
they had what you say that is out of the box in mangos working, others don't.
neither has mango.
now if they do release the code, well, maybe, and just maybe we see other projects improve their status and some new pop around.
mangos will only get better as time goes by, but it is not close to what you say its.
just not yet.

You are right, mangos state is far from Nost'. However as i mentioned above it doesn't really matter if you use src for learning / experimenting.
If you need stability and raids working auto means that you are not a beginner and your project is pretty massive in which case you don't need "guides" (you can loop from here)

I can only say that most of "vanilla private servers" don't even update / recompile with new commits coming, most of them just using some kind of outdated guides or even repacks.
Don't get me wrong, i'm waiting release of this stuff too, but mostly DB, cause some projects for exmpl. Valrkiriya will merge nost with their DB and i will be able to continue playing with my chars from Nost.
(of merging pathing system and other shit would be great, but mainly DB)
