Do we need an endorsed server?

by Jenrin » Thu Apr 14, 2016 9:13 am

Hi all,

With the recent news I would like to open up a discussion on this topic.

Do you think the Nostalrius Team should endorse a specific or a couple of servers?
Why/Why not?

My input:
If the server code is going public, that means we are going to see many new and older servers trying to reclaim the throne of Nostalrius, because they will be equally good scripted. I fear this is going to split the community even more. So for the sake of keeping the community together, I think Nostalrius Team should endorse a server. But I can also see why they would not like to do that.

Of course they can't due to legal issues. However i'm pretty sure we will notice where all people and maybe some GMs from Nost move.

Just expect a VHS vs Beta fight for some time. I would expect that there will be a flood, but only a few will likely be able to market themselves effectively. Maybe 4-5. But, generally someone will shout louder than others and win.

The issue that might happen is, with the source code already there. No-one will have ANY idea about the actual development competency of whoever comes out on top. In fact it won't be apparent until some time after the battle is "won" whether they're able to 1: handle the infrastructure required to support many players and 2: If they have the development competency to move the project forward and 3: If they sufficiently protect themselves from legal attacks.

I don't think from the outside looking in anyone would be able to ascertain the answers to these questions, and besides the way people flock to a server is usually generated by people that actually don't understand what makes one better then the other. Generally these large populations are built by hype. But there will be several shouts of hype at the same time as soon as that code is released. Hell, we've seen people shouting hype already without knowing if/when the code will be released!

I agree though, the owners here shouldn't openly endorse a server. It's just a process that will happen and the outcome will be what it is.

Agree with that. The endorsed server should be chosen by our community.

With the source code and so many new private server appearing every day, I'm pretty sure our best options for vanilla are:

a) Existing servers like Kronos, The Rebirth etc. Kronos is already swarmed by nost people, rebirth less so. I guess they are both good enough servers, though I've heard some nasty stuff about rebirth staff being corrupted and whatnot. I'm not gonna bother writing about those two because most of those stuff are general knowledge and I wouldn't really have anything new to offer.

b) Check on the servers that have been under work for quite some time now, which means they aren't just some vulture server trying to profit on the downfall of nost but actual, legit places.

Classic Warcraft http://classicwarcraft.com/ has been under development for quite some time now, you can follow their progression and they are active over their IRC (that Kiwi thing, first time I saw it). They seem devoted to the idea of making a really, and I mean REALLY high quality server, which could take some time, but once they do release, I think it will be one very nice server.

Crestfall https://www.reddit.com/r/CrestfallServer/
https://www.reddit.com/r/wowservers/com ... c_setting/

You can see that they have been working on this for some time now, they will have a webpage on very soon, open beta... They have their youtube channel with some videos, promising more.

These two have gotten my attention because once they are released, they will be fresh start realms, won't offer nost players any transfer, and in terms of progression should be rather close to what nost was when it released.

c)There is one server going on right now, Classic WoW Server https://classic-wow-server.net/. Honestly, it doesn't look like much, but I've decided to stick around for a couple of days, see how it goes. They claim they've been working on it for over a year, and when Nost went down, decided to release a bit before they had originally planned. However, they did a shit job with advertising (none, to be correct), so even though right now they are a fresh start vanilla server with a decent quality, they have almost no players. Imo it is worth at least checking out while we're waiting for other options.

Those are the first servers that come to mind, I'm aware that there are much more.
