Well, not really. Take Tesla Motors. They Open Source their stuff too. So anyone can build stuff based on their inventions. It is just a different way of acting. The base premise is: share your work, and people reusing it should share their modifications.

any program has a source, that you normally can not use nor see and thus can not work in or edit.
since the compiled version is what you use and see.
when the source is "open" it is free for the public to look at and improve or edit.

Microsoft or Apple will never make their software open source since they rely on software for their business income.
making it open source gives everyone the option to create the software for themselves and use it as they seem fit aslong as they respect the original creator and not use it for re-sale etc.

I am also not a coder or programmer but this is what I see in my IT career as open source

Thank you for the education, I do appreciate you taking the time to explain. It's a tough concept to follow for a non-programmer but I have been finding the (civil) discussion very interesting.

I hope in the end the guys at Nost do the right thing, I also understand why they can't be totally open and discuss everything on the forums and may have to keep quiet about some things. Until most of these kids get out in the working world they will not understand the concept of confidentiality and such, so their temper tantrums are due in part to ignorance.


I do believe the Nost team are inherently good folks trying to navigate a tricky situation. I hope they share back what they can, and if they have some type of legal threat hanging over them (which we may never know) they may have their hands tied and are just trying to get through this with the best possible outcome.

Why do you care now and not before Blizzard was watching? Why aren't you taking legal proceedings against other vanilla servers? I mean really... maybe i don't understand but your actions seem pretty lame.

Pretty simple thing. I usually just do not give further development support to people if I notice they have public servers. In this case Nostalrius may be using code copyrighted by us in making a contract for themselves. And this I find to be very lame, because they ride upon a century of our work without even asking for permission.

Just ask yourself, how would you feel if someone would take a century of your work, and probably sell it as theirs?

I tend to agree here, you're not winning over any votes by claiming Nostalrius is selling their code.

They have always been non-profit and said they would go open source when they close down. Now they might bring us legacy servers, which is even better.

If anything, the folks at MaNGOS should be going after the servers profiting off their work. There's zero indication that this is going on with Nostalrius.

We'll see. So far things promised have not been delivered. And mind you, I have seen this story a few times, and it never did end in favor of the players. I'm not here for the money, in my age you have enough of that. Just here for the actual cause, and observing if this will be another play on gamers or not.

Just wait a few weeks, and see the results of all this.

I do not think you understand. It's a selling point. Keep it off the market, be rewarded. In whatever way.

If the meeting doesn't go anywhere we should release the source code to improve the emulation so we don't have to rely on blizzard anymore. but hopefully blizzard is smart enough not to aliante this entire community
