I have kept my eye on vanilla private servers for over half a decade now, and I can tell you, when I first started following the 2 or 3 projects that existed back then, it was all handled by 2 or 3 developers that could go drunk and delete the database out of spite, and where you needed GM assistance to complete such terribly complex as the level 10 get-your-voidwalker quest.
We've come a long way since then, and Nost set a new high mark in what independent volunteer developers can achieve. So long as the people committed to this game connect with each other, share their code, share their fixes, communicate and keep working, better things are bound to happen. When a grassroots initiative is so strong, no amount of artificial stifling truly manages to shut people off
