They were charged with crimes and sued, prty sure you sue to reclaim monatery damages

Bliz would be spending an awful lot on lawyers just to throw these fan-project owners in prison for IP theft if there were no money to be reclaimed. They could just as easily went after every other private project as well as Nost in a big campaign in all countries where US litigation applies but they didn't and there is probably a reason for this.

If you actually believe this then I feel sorry for you. Maybe you should look into the matter when it comes to other servers before you throw accusations against the server that is the least likely out of all them to have been accepting money. It's quite clear they did everything to inform everyone that they did not accept any money. Read this: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=37403 and go quiet down please. Although based on your post history, I doubt you'll even bother spending a few minutes of your 'valuable' time gathering information about the topic. Let's not forget to mention that the servers which actively advertises their internet shops for their servers remains untouched by Blizzard. However, regardless of all this, I wish you to have a pleasant day.

P.S: Will be gone for a 2 weeks so no need to respond.

Yea I know what they say, but it doesn't change the fact that theres probably money behind all of this or blizzard would have just overlooked it like every other priv server.

I mean if not, then Blizzard really did just spend all that money to get all that bad PR just to put a couple fans in the slammer. Yea that one makes sense to me especially from a business perspective.

I was going to post on that having seen it on vanilla gaming .

One of the biggest lies in WoW is that all goldfarmers and their spam bots are Chinese and from China. Search on Youtube and you will find videos of Americans who scripted the first bots and sold gold.

It is entirely plausible GM's could sell gold, there is a huge market for it and GMs and server admin are in a perfect position to do it. They don't need bots to collect items to sell for gold, they just input a command and instant gold cap.

However, a quick glance at the the Account Issues page will show multitudes of banned accounts, almost all for gold trafficking. Buying/selling or the unfortunate who had their accounts stolen.

If the purpose of Nost was to sell gold and make a profit, banning your customers immediately after a purchase makes no business sense whatsoever. Why would a customer source be cut off after a single purchase? If a player is going to buy gold once, they will buy it again and again. Just look at the profit from FB tap tap games.

Funnily enough the server where I read this rumour, they actually sell gold themselves in the form of donations

You guys don't understand. Nostalrius was shut down because it was extremely popular and only because of that, nothing else. The whole fucking wow community was talking about it from streamers, almost every single big youtuber, official forums etc. It was just growing and growing to a point that even famous streamers and youtubers admitted playing there. Do you have any idea how damaging is the fact that a 10 year old version of the game, run on a private server is more popular and being talked about more than the actual retail game for the Blizzard brand?

Yes, Blizzard potentally lost money but not in the way you think. They loose money because of the bad reputation they are getting from all this drama and more and more people leaving retail for private servers like nost. They didn't want the whole community to talk about nostalrius when the new movie is coming out potentally attracting loads of new players and not to mention the new expansion.

Was it the right decision on their part? I think they assumed that after popping this balloon it's gonna make a lot of drama but after a few months (just before the movie releases) it would all quiet down and people would forget about it more or less, at least it wouldn't be so talked about. I think they underestimated the consequence of this, so who knows whats gonna happen.

That Redditor OP is full of it. There absolutely was not 40k+ gold available for sale on PvE realm on Day 2. Hardly ever. Obviously I'm not an unbiased, impartial observer so you can either believe me or ignore me. I don't think we even had gold advertisers on PvE until a week in or so. The prices on both PvE and PvP were pretty damn high too. If GMs and/or admins were selling gold, why would we ban thousands of accounts for buying/selling/trafficking gold and why would we have kept the same price as the other gold sellers? We could have undercut them easily enough. Yes, some players got away with buying gold for a time. Maybe someone got away with for good because we were shut down or they quit playing before we caught them.

It's a perplexingly common human need to conjure conspiracy theories around any- and everything, whether it's the 9/11, vaccinations, financial institutions or a private WoW vanilla server.

the server was shutted down cos it became way too popular, and from those 150k active players, maybe and probably 10k have came back to retail since the rest of private server are just a bunch of crap.

And that is money for blizzard, and less problems, because the last thing they want and wanted to do is to create legacy servers, and nostalrius was doing that.

Stop bullshitting fucking idiots.

Easy proof of the amount of gold is the AH prices.

Gold in wow, like money in the real world, has no actual value by itself. It is a thing to help transactions of actual valuable things.
Governments print extra money (in a way are counterfeiting) and devalue the currency. For example: Bread that costs 10 of a currency this year will cost after a certain time 11, 12, 13... etc...
If the amount of a currency in circulation increases, with all things the same, prices will rise.

A significant influx of cheatgold/goldseller gold would be reflected in the prices on the AH.

I loved the first satire post, and then had the misfortune of reading the future posts of people who actually believe this. The reddit post in question is clearly based upon conjecture. "from what me and others gathered" clearly means, from what me and my idiot gossiping friends came up with. I started with pve from near the beginning and I didn't see anything to this level of gold spamming until the realm existed for a while. Also how did they come to these numbers? They would have had to collectively purchase this amount of gold between them for real proof (which would have cost many thousands of dollars if I remember correctly the gold prices being spammed at the time). Nostalrius clearly did not profit from this, and went out of their way to remain transparent with donations (even removing themselves from the equation entirely at the end). Add on top of that they were banning accounts left and right for gold purchasing/selling, these accusations make 0 sense. I'm pretty sure the people who believe this crap are the ones who are ACTUALLY wearing tinfoil hats, and at some point believed the government is beaming hypnotic suggestion into their brains via microwaves/cell phone towers/<insert random modern technology sounding word here>. It just angers me that the Nost staff gave us so much fun and happiness, yet there are still detracting trolls out there willing to smear their name cause they heard from their friends cousins sister's reddit post something that may have given some inkling of evidence of the Nost staff profiting in some way.
