One of the biggest lies in WoW is that all goldfarmers and their spam bots are Chinese and from China. Search on Youtube and you will find videos of Americans who scripted the first bots and sold gold.
It is entirely plausible GM's could sell gold, there is a huge market for it and GMs and server admin are in a perfect position to do it. They don't need bots to collect items to sell for gold, they just input a command and instant gold cap.
However, a quick glance at the the Account Issues page will show multitudes of banned accounts, almost all for gold trafficking. Buying/selling or the unfortunate who had their accounts stolen.
If the purpose of Nost was to sell gold and make a profit, banning your customers immediately after a purchase makes no business sense whatsoever. Why would a customer source be cut off after a single purchase? If a player is going to buy gold once, they will buy it again and again. Just look at the profit from FB tap tap games.
Funnily enough the server where I read this rumour, they actually sell gold themselves in the form of donations
