I don't see them releasing legacy servers around the same time Legion will launch. I'm thinking 2017.

Just keep in mind the person posting that thread didn't provide a screenshot. Need something like this to make it real.

I submitted a ticket to refund a preorder, and highlighted that the lack of support for Legacy/Progression servers was my reason. The GM confirmed my preorder, and gave the usual "not enough interest" response.
Today, exactly one week later, I got a follow up email. The new line is:
"As for our chat I did share some of my own personal opinion on the legacy servers topic. Of course I cannot speak for our company as a whole when it is my own opinion and point of view. But the recent events surrounding legacy servers have given us all an opportunity to consider that this is something a larger group of the community (larger than what we expected) does want. Hopefully this can be reflected in our actions in the future."
I really don't think that the employee would be permitted to say something like this without consent from a higher-up. I just thought it was interesting, and I wonder if anyone else got a similar "update" to a closed ticket.

Blizzard fanboys and fangirls tend to have a herd mentality and will automatically applaud whatever Blizz does. Therefore, if Blizzard ever does set up legacy servers, the same folks telling you today that the idea is terrible and posting their walls of NO will be right there to say how great an idea legacy servers are.

And the funny thing is most of us legacy advocates aren't going to hate them. We'll just be confused why they fought us so hard to begin with.

In the field of communication, we call that a leak. A rumor. Blizzard could did that intentionnaly to make the "buzz" to boost subscription when it will happen.

Be careful what you wish for. Devils advocate to what I usually say--

Say Blizzard does open up Legacy servers.

You think they'll actually be true to what it was 12 years ago? Blizzard is no longer the same company it was in the 90s, regardless of what some guy with anime titties as his profile banner tweets. It's in the business of making money, not making games.

They will "polish" up talent trees, they will sell you cosmetic items, they will make so many minor tweaks to the game that it'll be an uncanny valley where it is unclear whether or not this was the same thing you experienced years ago. Does transmogging items really matter on a legacy server (only $10 to enable the function!!)? Does dual spec really hurt the playerbase (Only $5/mo to activate this VIP feature)? Why shouldn't a player be able to spend $15 on a custom mount, if that mount goes the same speed as the others?

You know that by opening up Legacy servers Blizzard would have much stronger grounds to go after private servers--of all expansions-- because they can argue that they actually ARE hurting their profits because they are in direct competition with the company at that point? But let's say that those servers are in countries that don't give a shit about Blizzard lawyers. Why would players at that point continue to play on private, poorly emulated servers instead of the legit thing? Their populations would shrink and shrink as their pool shifts over to retail legacy servers. Soon, emulated servers would be as they were when Stormcraft and WoWscape were the big names--100% garbage (instead of the 60% variety today).

Play the servers that are out there instead of wanting big brother to give you his version of it.

Blizzard still support Diablo2, Starcraft 1, Warrcraft 2 and Warcraft 3. You can download for free Lost Vikings, Blackthorne and Rock'n'roll racing [at least if you have a battle.net account]. I wouldn't be surprised if they fixed up Warcraft 1 the same way [after all it runs in dosbox]. I'm not sure about Diablo 1 but presumably that can be fixed too if need be [Windows 10 compatibility etc]. Plenty of games companies are resurrecting old games [gog.com does it as their main business, even EA or whoever have made SimCity available], it's cheap to recycle for more dosh or publicity or just to keep paying customers people happy [and paying].

Setting up WoW servers for previous expansions would be pretty much in line with that, especially coupled to a reasonably hands-off, cheap solution and limited GM input. But as others have said there might be other models possible along mojang lines.
