People forget that Nost was literally 1 or 2 steps above Stock mangos when it first released.

I think people are now generally happy with where the scripts are now, which is viewed as an improvement relative to the average private server.

OK, now how about THIS additional conspiracy theory:

Nostalrius said they "may" release the code on April 30 for...ahem..."educational purposes". Perhaps this is really a deadline to Blizzard to react positively to the social media pressure regarding legacy servers, otherwise a wide community will have access to their code to release new, higher quality private servers, likely in jurisdictions which may be hard to litigate.

I don't think this is a stretch to suggest this.

Or Blizzard just waits until they get the code for free?

This thread is interesting to read but its not possible! Blizzard isn't smart enough to do this, your giving them to much credit. Perhaps it was Mark Kern who was making Nostalrius! That is more like it!

What if!

Nostalrius was actually run by Blizzard employees from their France office (I checked they do have an office there).

This would also be a reason why they didn't want to "fight the man" and move the server elsewhere...and would also explain how they could afford to run the server(s) on their own dime.

...and why they had a such a passion for the game 'as it was'. :o

EDIT: Ultimately to show Blizzard HQ that Legacy Servers are greatly wanted by the community. And the self satisfaction of knowing "yes we can" do this...even with out the source code.

Activision could be trying to sink Blizzard to absorb their key employees and eliminate competition. 99% guess though. Either way I just want a good MMO FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
