It seems that Brack has denied even granting a license to a third party (e.g. Nostalrius) to run Vanilla servers:

"And while we've looked into the possibility, there is not a clear legal path to protect Blizzard's IP and grant an operating license to a pirate server."

No seriously, fuck you J Allen Brack.

There MIGHT be an argument for saying this based on any existing server operation. But, the team behind Nostalrius could start a new server, with a new name. Then there's nothing I can see legally to stop them licensing the right to run the server. They COULD license them for free, or to make it look more compelling charge a token fee $1, €1, £1 for the license. To say they cannot is a nonsense for sure. You don't even need to understand IP and contract law to know that. Other companies do it all the time.

J Allen Brack is not some 2nd rate clown. Well, we know he is in actuality a second-rate clown, but in Blizzard he is Vice President second to Mike Morhaime himself.

So, when the Vice President of Blizzard says there is no way to ever license a Third Party to run Legacy Servers we know they will never, under any circumstances, do it at least not as long as that clown Brack is still VP at Blizzard.

It is pretty clear that the Game is Over and we lost.

All of a sudden our good friends at Blizzard have been thinking about us this whole time, and they even have been looking into every possibility tirelessly!

Oh my how naive have we all been? Legacy servers just aren't possible, it is just too hard (damn right you fools current blizzard employees of course vanilla wow is too hard for you, to play and to make).

They never meant to shut down Nostalrius, but what a shame they had to, they always wanted to open vanilla servers but what a pitty it is not possible.

It is all a big fucking misunderstanding guys, nothing to see here, move along!

Blizzard will continue to make crap like WOD , Overwatch and split Starcraft 3 into 5 games! And they are everyone's favourite company amirite?

Yes, it's pretty much what I'm reading now that I read his post again.

It looks clear, they're BSing to avoid licensing 3rd party servers (honestly I didn't expect they would until I read that post the first time). They will either do nothing, or make these half arsed "Pristine" servers, wait for them to fail entirely and say "I told you so" never to speak of the subject again.

A shame really, I outlined in the other thread that technologically it'd be possible to do this in a single client with some work. But, they don't want to. I understand why. Imagine, you were behind the saga of WoW. You've been constantly pushing forward, inventing new features etc etc. Then, you release a realm based on your first ever version of the game and it gains more popularity than your current latest and greatest? It'd be a huge embarrassment.

The risk that legacy realms could become as popular or more than the current game is just too much of a big risk to take.

Nostalrius has become large, too large righ now:) Nost staff (with the Nostalrius community support) achieved something unique in the MMO gaming industry. Whatever they choose now, nearly 800k gamer around the world (and the other newcomers) always remeber the server starting the letter N. (But admins pls, choose well and release the data:))

The only thing I like about the "pristine" realms idea is the name.
Because that's what true legacy servers would be. Pristine.

Stand firm. We want true legacy servers. Nothing less.
