If this was a ploy all along I must say its impressive and a hell of a way to gauge community interest. I for one can care less as long as the outcome is Legacy servers.

omg! I actually want this conspiracy theory to be real! that would be a pretty creative and I daresay ingenious piece of marketing if true: confirm the market still exists for the product, and then elaborately stage the 'Blizz Vs Nostalrius' pantomime, ie the lawsuit then shutdown and petition etc, which all generates a lot of publicity for legacy servers and gets a lot of people generally talking about WoW who might not have been before! It creates a grassroots fanbase (the 'legacy movement') prior to the release of legacy servers, which will no doubt be a big event accompanied by a huge marketing push: ''Experience the Beginning'' or something like that, which will also conveniently appeal to a new audience who have just seen the WoW movie and would be interested in getting on board at the start of a revival of WoW during it's most famous era! Seems a very effective way of creating marketing buzz around essentially re-releasing a 12 year old game! And now that you mention it, Nostalrius did have a level of polish and professionalism that was orders of magnitude greater than any other private server I ever tried..... the pieces of the puzzle fall into place!!

But I'm not saying I think that's true, I just enjoy conspiracies. 8-) I would not diminish the fine effort of the Nost team!

And that's why it's not true. The bolded disqualifies Blizzard.

100% ignorance...

-Where do they come from?
Nost used to be a french-only server and has been around for years. Daemon and Viper recruited new people when they decided to go international because the server was pretty much empty.

-Le professional marketing
Yeah the server isn't run by dumb kids. They have experience and are great at what they do. The server got a lot of attention from 4chan and reddit early on and I don't think this was done by the staff actually. Some players really helped build the hype (Hatson...!). Beat Kronos because they released earlier, people were excited about both and wanted to play, so everyone naturally went to the first to open. The first stress test Kronos did was a failure too. Didn't help. Nost could release earlier because a lot was already done from the french-only server.

-Money
I think they just wanted to avoid legal battles against blizz0rd. Remember scapegaming? Blizzard Wins $88 Million in Private Server Lawsuit
Also this type of hardware (see somewhere in announcement) is certainly expensive but it's not THAT bad, get real. No employees here. Also OVH is good and fairly cheap hosting.

-Bullshit reason
See the scapegaming case. Believe or not but some people don't want their hobby to cost them several millions, but yeah I guess the internet warriors who haven't done anything would risk it without hesitation...

-Some forum thread
Who the fuck cares? There is/was countless threads on 4chan/reddit anyway so it's not like it was secret

-"we are finally making a change"
topkek. Who is "we" and what did you do exactly? If Nost was orchastrated by blizz0rd as suggested, then all you did was answer a ridiculous marketing test.

This whole thing makes no sense anyway. Have you not seen the backlash on blizz after Nost shutdown? If they were considering opening vanilla servers (which they keep saying they don't want to do) they would have done a fucking poll on their website or something, not recruit a handful of volunteers to rewrite all the scripts one by one over 5 years.

It probably wasn't Blizzard, itself, but it could -very well- have been Blizzard staff from the France branch (yep, Blizzard has offices in France).

We keep hearing how many of the devs and GMs want a Legacy Server but, golly-gosh, it never seems to happen.

It could be that Blizzard Entertainment would like to do Legacy, but Activision is saying it won't be profitable and black balling the motion.

Whelp...now there's definitive proof that Legacy Servers would be profitable.

Vivendi doesn't own Blizzard anymore. Activision-Blizzard bought out their own shares from Vivendi in 2013.
