MaNGOS was GPL from day one and is to this day. Changing is hardly possible, as that would require written consent from all contributors, and some by now are even not alive anymore.

So it will always be GPL.

There was no intimation that it should be changed, only that I had the impression from the OP the original code was not GPL (which then naturally led to the question about whether or changing to GPL was possible).

Not really, my specialty is server side of things, reverse engineering, build systems, infrastructure, devops, cross platform porting.

Hello theluda,

I created an account just in case you were the real theluda to say thanks for starting the incredible project that was MaNGOS. It made everything possible. I like your suggestion even if you are not who you say you are... the code should be committed to GIT. All these private servers have worked on replicating retail and never just commuted to the original project... ArcEmu was written in C++ as well so I do not know why people are complaining on what you used. It gives good performance. Most games use this language.

Thanks :)

Be funny if I made it work with Vanilla and it was popular. Bliz would go bonkers =-)

Say, do you know anyone from back when you were working on this who wouldn't mind being asked?

Would you be willing to work on a private server that is derived from the core repo i.e. all changes to the server would be reflected into the open source repo.

Also, since you and Winterflaw are here - do you have any other suggestions on how Nost may live e.g. via p2p networking based on players computers.

Thanks for all of your hard work! I agree with you in your suggestion... goes without saying. "Don't go all Blizz on us".

Well I don't think it has to be right now.

Nostalrius is already doing TBC development on a public github repository. I believe releasing modified mangos which nostalrious used is great idea. Anyone can contribute and make it even more perfect. But lets make the server running again first before 1m people claims they are nostalrius 2.
English isn’t my first language, so please excuse any mistakes.

Well, that is hard to say. Really depends on the project.

Well technically there are solutions for this issue but I haven't really invested much thought into this. Back in 2005 we considered something for this exact case, and thought about making sort of a central realm list for all running servers but we shelved it mostly for privacy reasons.

The p2p line of thought is highly speculative, to say the least. It is a research project, with a number of core unanswered questions, questions which may in fact be insoluable. It is not something which will in the short or medium term allow Nost to return.

It's a shame I've not done my Masters - it'd be a good PhD project, I think.

Nost either needs Bliz to license them, or to rehost in a different jurisdiction, where Bliz can't issue a C&D.

I also wonder how that would affect the Nost team personally - since some of them live in France, I would expect the French courts to go after them if Nost turns up again in another country.

Heading out, back later.

Releasing Nost's source code on GitHub or some other medium seems like the best thing. Something similar was probably their original intention; it's just a matter if whether the Dev's lawyer convinces them not to for their own sakes.

Would prefer they didn't release our account info that way, though.

As to the p2p MMO idea: I'm a machinist, not a software engineer, but all the p2p games I've played have suffered because of it. Maybe if everyone playing hosts only a small portion at a time, with the game further splitting the load as more players join, similar in concept to a torrent?

Instead of lag increasing as more players join, it would get better. Although I would imagine it would be inherently laggy anyway, and pushing out updates would be a nightmare.

I dunno. Just ignore me. I deal with mechanical problems, not software. CNC coding is nothing like python or C++.
