I dont see how clustering would be a long term fix unless you spike this to an absurd level. I mean if clustering would allow 13k players to play like we did with 5k online a year ago (around half a second delay) its cool but still dealbreaking compared to perfect conditions.
Whats the plan if we end up with 18k, 20k, imagine 25k players? Even if you divide the pressure on to an increasing amount of different clustering pannels, at some point increasing spawnrates and similar stuff just wont do it anymore. We want the herb to respawn every 3 minutes or a herb node every 10 yards? 15 raids simultaneously entering BRM?
I have no clue what possiblities there are due to the complete rejection of splitting the server into different ones with like 5k population each and crowdfund for the required hardware. So lets just assume that at some point this rejection will fade away when it gets ridiculous enough:
How about a multitude of different servers with ONE shared database? You simply choose which server you log on and all your actions, items gold levels gathered are noted in the database and when you log off and switch server, these changes are copied over. As for AH and BG's these would have to be cross-realm.
People would just log on the currently least populated server to avoid lag and delay. Shamelessly stolen from runescape.
