It's not that difficult to explain this. For example David Brevik, the inventor of the series, and the producer of DI & II didn't get to participate.
In fact I think it completely went by anyone from ex-Blizzard North, but don't quote me on this, it's 2 AM and I should be sleeping, not doing research.
Correct, Blizzard North was shut down, and none of the original team took part in Diablo III.
They went out and created other companies and tried out a few other titles.
Curiosity feature: the amount of people playing Diablo II is published to this very day. The amount of people playing Diablo III.... well, I guess it's not an useful metric to blah blah blah.

This company is just... a complete has-been. They lost 13.5% of their revenue in 1 year. I should know, I went out and studied their financial results in Q4 2014 and Q4 2015. Activision kept their level, but Blizzard is now something like 22% of the whole Activision Blizzard's overall structure. Probably less now that they bought King Digital and all the Candy Crush super duper games (5.9 billion USD transaction).
Look at the fate of Starcraft 2, of Diablo III, of World of Warcraft. Their best product right now is the Hearthstone card thing, with Heroes of the Storm being... well, less than stellar in the MOBA scene.
I'm led to believe they have quite a bit of hope, and need, for Overwatch. A brand new franchise, something that hadn't happened since 1998. Let's see if Jeffrey Kaplan gives them a way out.
