If anything, it would make it easier AND MORE secure for others to set up their own "Nostalrius" clones. Don't really see an issue with releasing the source, it would actually be much appreciated

But, I'm not going to hold my breath.
Who knows. If Blizz was to actually set up their own classic servers, in a completely proper and true state, with a stable environment and community, what would the point of the classic emulation scene be? Sure, you might have a few that still do not want to pay subs, but the majority of players (which I sincerely hope would be playing because vanilla was awesome) would leave the scene entirely. It would be pretty dead.
And I forgot to mention, if Blizz was to set up classic servers, then classic emulation would be fairly easy to do compared to chasing expansions. You wouldn't have to worry about getting sniffs and other needed information within a set time frame like you have to do between expansion cycles now. No more guesstimates, no more archive digging, you could simply log onto the classic servers and verify everything yourself. Which honestly would make the Nostalrius code completely worthless from a developers point of view.
