If there is no promise at blizcon then the truce is over and we go to war again.

I think most players have already moved on to other servers, either not trusting Blizzard to actually do anything for us, or simply not wanting to wait. With no new updates from them, I don't hold out much faith anymore myself, unless they're planning a huge surprise with it at Blizzcon. I'll linger around with my eyes open until then, but I won't act surprised if(when?) nothing happens.

Honestly, the wait is really long, i understand that most people have just moved on and got tired of waiting. But still, Legion and Overwatch coming out before blizzcon, makes a little bit of hope that legacy will be released on next blizzcon

What we need is a fully-fledged legal and business proposition for external vanilla servers, to put to Blizzard as key signatories.

Nostalrius showed Blizzard three things:

- what could be done technically in terms of setting up and running a vanilla server, albeit with some remaining glitches or errors or variations from the perfect vanilla experience

- the extent of player interest in a Blizz-like vanilla server when it's F2P and cross-regional [because that's what we actually had]

- a team outside Blizzard can organise and deliver the server, content and player support, again with certain shortcomings but even Blizzard support of retail has never been perfect

The way forward MIGHT be for Blizzard to take this in-house, and that raises all kinds of complexities for Blizzard, it will hit up against their internal strategic vision and other goals, etc., quite apart from technical considerations and their likely desire to do it low-cost [hence the pristine proposal]. As a community outside of Blizzard all we can is lobby, hope and wait.

But we can also continue outside of Blizzard, trying to develop more full-fledged proposals for an approach that would legitimise Nost-style servers outside of Blizzard, without causing Blizzard to lose IP rights [or whatever their issue was] and addressing any other legal or business issues that could get in the way.

In other words, Nost has undertaken a technical proof of concept together with an extended technical field test, we now need a viable business proposition to support that, if we want Nost-style servers to become reality. Blizzard will not do that for us, they will likely only consider their own, internal options.

We need to put together a team of legal and business experts to work on this. We would need Blizzard input to that as a key stakeholder, and that would need careful handling.

This looks to me the only way forward if we want anything to happen outside of waiting on Blizzard.

What dumbfounds me is that people still think this whole post cease and desist period had any other goal than to get the Nostal team to pose for pictures with Mike Morhaime so they can stop quaking in their boots that worse legal troubles are looming.

They got branded "ambassadors" by Blizz PR; after 12 years of emulation now Blizzard has the initiative and there's still people waiting on Kotick and Co to bring legacy and this is somehow considered a "win".

So NostBegins gets Damocles sword lifted off their heads, the "you d-d-d-d think you do but you don't" stoodge for Kotick (J Allen Brack) sidesteps the PR disaster and you somehow think classic lovers won something.

Just amazing.

PS. Nostalrius team provided great platform for the community and handled the uptime period of their server very well, for certain I can only thank them for the experience
The post C&D period though is a travesty.
They've changed stance faster than a weathercock.

Yeah, it looks like Morhaime & co. were just giving free trips to Irvine. They probably have no real interest in doing anything with legacy servers. Those trips are a negligible expense for a company of their size. Now, their main motivation is to just sweep the whole thing under the rug so they are able to market Legion.

Nost should release most of their source code to the Mangos community, so we can all move on with life.

They will probably release it if nothing happens at Blizzcon. They have to wait for that, and that will be the "now or never" for older versions of WoW to be officially supported. But rather than publicly release it, I'd prefer them to hand pick a few promising projects. If this is leaked on a torrent somewhere, you're going to see 100 different brand new Nost rip off projects from fake sites and people with no actual talent to use it. That won't make finding a new server of quality any easier. They should pick servers that were already in development prior to Nost's shutdown, and have some display of talent already available. They should also dump any that plan to run a cash shop, although they should not mention this, as people would simply say they won't, then do it later.

As a player, that issue should be of little concern to you...you can make the same argument to every new iteration of the Mangos project going back in history. The cream still rises to the top, somehow. As has been stated before, much of what made Nost a good project was their organization (not trying to diminish their efforts with the code, they did some good things with that as well.) The "Nost rip-off" projects would all come out and then die out relatively quickly once the community gets used to the improvements for all private servers. The ones with staying power tend to have good player support, organization, etc.
This is all hypothetical at this point, of course.
