exactly
they claim they are the best quality but dont have any proof. and some people prefer crestfall over nostalrius because of their ''imaginary'' higher quality. cant believe they fell for them. also the staff are unprofessional and have negative altitude towards nostalrius.
also what makes me not play on their server is their PTE philosophy. that means that after sometime the classic server will be gone. and they want to progress to the latest expansions which doesnt make any sense at all. why do the bad expansions all over again?

crestfall = blizzard 2.0

It doesn't mean the classic server will be gone. At least get your facts right before trashtalking something.

They will be releasing expansions, TBC and WotLK for sure, after that who knows. The PvP vanilla realm will stay open and available for play, with a choice to transfer your 60's to TBC. The same will happen with TBC realm once WotLK comes out, so in time they will have those 3 expansions running. No one will be forced to go beyond vanilla so I don't see the problem with PTE.

I want to say something about population.

I played on Nostalrius last year. I loved playing vanilla again and enjoy a lively world with my favorite activity : hanging out in the zones doing some blend of solo PvE and PvP.

For me open world PvP / dueling is the most fun I can have with WoW / a MMO. I pretty much don't care about any instances, because I'm interested in the open world, unpredictable encounters, choices of engagement or not, varying parameters with involvement of different mobs and whatnot.

But Nostalrius was very, very crowded.

This wouldn't necessarily be a problem for any MMO, but imo it is for World of Warcraft. I would say mainly because this game has pretty crazy strong crowd control and some imbalanced things like invisibility, power outclassing with a few levels or some heavy gear. It's really hard to disengage from a fight. Many times, if you see someone 30m ahead and you're at 50% hp it's already too late for escape. If the world is crowded, you get ganked all the time in the most stupid ways, and it gets harder to find interesting engagements because there is always a bunch of guys nearby who will wreck you in 5sec if you attack someone of their faction.

In my experience, the World pvp situations work best when there is enough room to hide, locate, choose to engage or not, space to run away, to be left alone, etc. Such that a lowish or "medium" population for a pvp wow server seems to be the best to me, and overcrowded a potentially unplayable. I left Nostalrius for this reason. Stranglethorn was stupid. Even in Desolace, though it was possible to do some leveling, engaging people was way too risky because you'd quickly get caught in a 2v1.

Just some thoughts. Imo if you open a PvP server, that's great, but would it better to open a few? Think of how hard it is to escape when you are attacked, you really need the space. My best memories I think are still from the vanilla blizzard servers with a "recommended" or "medium" population. I guess even the "high" were most of the time not nearly as crowded as Nostalrius?

The past weeks, I've been playing on a server with a rly low population. It is too low.. but it is more enjoyable. But it really is too low... Due to the way the game is designed and the size of the world, population is really important for a WoW server, especially PvP.

[if you ask me I think this game could be 5 times better if you tone down the crowd control, some of the charges or bursts, invisibility, bit less power difference per levels, and add some things to do in the world :P it would be amazing ; make more zones matter to more levels and easier to disengage]

I don't really understand how you like the open world PvP but you don't like a crowded server. Only a few zones were REALLY crowded on Nost, mostly STV because there's 10 levels worth of quests there and it's a big zone. But outside of that it wasn't all that bad. The other populated zones were low lvl but those were filled with people of your own faction.

I actually loved that there were always people around, makes it feel real. Makes it feel like you actually have to fight the other faction over quests, ores, herbs or just for no reason. It feels like war. This is sorely missing from current wow where the zones are SO big and so few people populate them that it often contributes to feeling like a singleplayer game where the only interaction is with NPC's.

Imo, on Nost, it was perfect.

Yea I agree. If you're whining about too much PvP on a PvP server...then PvE server ---------> this way my friend.

It's true that it was mostly stranglethorn/desolace level zones that were too crowded. It actually stopped me from playing because even leveling wasn't fun. Stranglethorn was simply horrible to play, I've talked to others who thought the same. A big bummer to me because it is my favorite zone :P When around Ashenvale things were quite all right.

this kind of post or behavior is also what made me quit Nostalrius. There are a quite the bunch of people who just keep an aggressive behavior 100% of the time. They disregard anything that doesn't help them being aggressive and keep the antisocial attitude. (not necessarily the case elsewhere, there were a lot on nostalrius)

I don't want to be a dick, but no one gives a shit whether you quit or didn't quit, the fact of the matter is Nost was the most popular Vanilla server for a reason and it certainly wasn't the scripting. People came to Nost because of the population, albeit super inflated and a laggy mess, it still provided a unique experience that even Retail Vanilla couldn't match.

Sure I'm not saying Nostalrius was just bad just making a point about population. I'm sharing my experience not because I want you to care about me in particular but to explain my point about population. (So you don't need to be a dick ^^)

I honestly think, after playing on a number of private servers, that Nost's only "real" difference is the population. Without that, it's kind of another ho-hum private server with its own fair share of problems.

As the Dark Souls players say, "git gud", meaning get good.

I levelled a disc/holy priest and used STV, during that first month. Later, I levelled a hunter, a warrior and a shaman and visited STV (as well as Arathi/Hillsbrad+Alterac/Desolace) with all of them. I'm not a PvP god, I'm a scrub, yet I persevered and got a bunch of HKs as well. My playtimes included both the EU and the NA peak hours, so you can't claim that I didn't experience the crowds.

I got Hydrocane with my priest and used that staff to hide underwater when I needed to escape. Combine that with Waterwalking to get a good head start from the beach, and no ganker could touch me. Really, every Alliance character should do Gnomeregan few times to get that staff, for Horde it's a bit tricky. No casting time, no reagent requirements, can swap it in the middle of combat - it has saved my butt so many times.

Ditch the roads as well, there are so many ambush locations along them. It's better to make your way off-road as you'll be less likely to run into opposition without being prepared. Don't eat/drink out in the open, hide behind a tree or in a crevice or a pillar. There are plenty of decent hiding spots on every map. If you're sitting out in the open, next to quest mobs, no shit someone is going to come along and jump you. They'll even get a guaranteed crit since you're sitting.

It sounds from your post that you prefer "fair & equal" 1on1 matches. That's not going to happen, let's face it. Open world PvP is inherently unfair and WoW is a team-based game, not a shooter. The classes are not balanced and that's great. You can probably take down class X easily while class Y can ruin your day. Still, there is room for player skill - nothing more satisfying than killing people as a disc/holy priest by baiting people into wasting their kick/CS/silence on my shadow school after putting SWP up, then just smiting and wanding them to death while healing myself. I've seen battles where 1 guy takes down 2 or even 3 others. And the level difference, while important, isn't actually a I WIN button in every situation. 60s can be taken down by a group of lowbies if they work together. You could also always call for help - with so many people online at all times, if some annoying 60 was shutting down a lowbie zone, it was quite likely for another bored 60 to come help if you asked in WorldDefence or World.

Which leads me to my last and most important point - group up. It's a MMO, there is nothing preventing you from questing with your guildies or just random people you meet in the zone. Strength in numbers and all that.
