I think my favorite bug was seeing Thomas the Baker in SW ranting about the Sundering. I get that they had bigger problems than fixing unimportant NPC dialogue, but it was distracting as hell. I remember leveling a Dwarf and the hunter trainer in the starter zone was using flavor dialogue from fucking BC. xP

Excatly my thoughts since i started playing private servers.
The recreation, or if you want to call it that - reverse engineering, could have been long done. If these projects truly were community driven and w/o any thought of profit.

I probably won't play private- vanilla again, but I will watch this topic with interest:
If Nost truly stands up to their word and make the scripts publicly accessable.
I will have nothing but praise for this project.

--- I really think that an open source project towards the recreation of legacy servers should be made.
I certainly am interested in contributing towards it.

And thus the penny drops.

Now all your attacks on startup projects make sense, they were selfless acts of concern for the community.

Well, this thread prompted me to make a financial contribution to mangos, without them none of this would have happened. ;)

once the admins clear the air and make an announcement on what's next after this shutdown. I'm sure they will release the code on github and such (like the TBC realm was too).

either way, private legacy servers wouldn't be possible without someone making the breakthrough. for that, the playerbase appreciates it.

I have been watching the whole shutdown discussion for a while, and would like to weigh in with a few things. First, let me introduce myself.

I am TheLuda, the guy who founded the MaNGOS project on which Nostalrius core and database are based back in 2005 and have thus have seen quite some shit in the scene.

So, after reading the announcement from Nostalrius about shutting down and probably releasing their changes to MaNGOS, I would like to suggest this:

Simply release the sources on Github.

Here is why:

  • it would make Nostalrius the first vanilla server project that actually contributes back to the original core in 11 years of project existence.
  • it would show you actually are really true about the vanilla community,
  • and it would be the first time a private server does not just leech from the original project and the works of thousands of people who never receive money, gratitude or anything else.
Thus, Nostalrius team, do this and prove you really care about the community, do something honest, honorable which never has been done before in the history of the whole vanilla scene.

Also, keep the database of player data. Or hand it over to a successor. Releasing it would be illegal.

With kind regards,
TheLuda (the poor guy who founded and created MaNGOS 11 years ago)

P.S: and to those possibly crying fake or something else, the team can check my forum email address. It is the original mangos address.

Hello and accept my thanks for the wonderful work with MaNGOS that you done !

I would very much like to share something with you, its a very annoying thing that its plaguing the private servers community, from years. Its probably not related with MaNGOS, but I have to ask you, since you are obviously a very knowledgeable person. Its a problem regarding the 1.12.1 client, which seems to have issues with graphic syncing with the new systems. Basically what happens is small constant visual stutterings, that can be felt everywhere in the game, yet they dont appear to be related to anything. Thousands of players tried among the years to fix this issue with no avail. What's interesting is that this mini stuttering occurs also under opengl, so it doesnt appear to be dxapi related at all.

Also, I am not talking about the occasional other players delay which sometime makes them warp/choppy moving near you, I am talking about a much choppier gameplay thats happening each second, with your character and suroundings, like the client would actually lose some frames each second. Some say its a multicore issue of new systems, others including me that its an issue related to clock. Whats also interesting, is that this choppy movement/fps loss NEVER happens in the character screen, turning the character around is perfectly smooth.

I am posting here a link with this phenomenon, maybe you know a fix or you can give an advice.

notice how each second it seems that there are frames dropped, yet if you analyse it with a fps counter, nothing is lost, fps is perfectly stable. so far I tested systems with xp /w7/w8/w10, ati/nvidia, 60hz/100hz/120hz, still same thing. no matter the system, once in game you get choppiness.

Any thoughts ?

Would be nice if another party (or parties) can be found to take up the mantle for a true "passion project" - as long as there is someone willing to do the non-profit model + keep the hackers/farmers at bay, all the gimmicky P2W servers should fall by the wayside.

vaylane wrote:From a legal point of view, it might not be that easy to hand over the database. They got a warning to stop their "activities" as a private unlicensed/illegal server. Simply setting up the server on another country to avoid Blizzs reach, or PASSING over the DB to another brave soul, might be perceived as a move that shows ignorance to the warning "Stop Illegal Activities".

It would be difficult to prove that they are not simply passing data over to someone else, or for that matter prove the source of the data...many people roll the same toons (race/class/name) across multiple projects I can't see how this would be confused with a cease/desist action which is pretty straightforward.

Are you using nVidia or AMD? I've heard of this before. Also of note is that certain animations like windfury won't properly execute.

Your post color hurts my eyes. Show me a finished product. Just so you know in advance, I refuse to play on servers that take donations in exchange for in-game perks, or servers which offer x5 EXP events and shit like that.
