A server is in large part the community of people on that server.
Being able to move your char easily means you can easily move away from that community - where the community is of great value and moving away from it is a great loss.
You'd need a good part of the community to move with you, which is unlikely.
Being able to individually save your character is useful. Loosing your char when a server goes down is a major problem.
