Here is why:

  • it would make Nostalrius the first vanilla server project that actually contributes back to the original core in 11 years of project existence.
  • it would show you actually are really true about the vanilla community,
  • and it would be the first time a private server does not just leech from the original project and the works of thousands of people who never receive money, gratitude or anything else.
Thus, Nostalrius team, do this and prove you really care about the community, do something honest, honorable which never has been done before in the history of the whole vanilla scene.

Yes, please don't back out on releasing source. So many vanilla servers have made great improvements to the code, died, then never shared their progress with the community that gave them so much to begin with.

happens with both nVidia and AMD, as I specifically wrote.

theluda wrote:Greetings,

I have been watching the whole shutdown discussion for a while, and would like to weigh in with a few things. First, let me introduce myself.

I am TheLuda, the guy who founded the MaNGOS project on which Nostalrius core and database are based back in 2005 and have thus have seen quite some shit in the scene.

So, after reading the announcement from Nostalrius about shutting down and probably releasing their changes to MaNGOS, I would like to suggest this:

Simply release the sources on Github.

Also, keep the database of player data. Or hand it over to a successor. Releasing it would be illegal.

With kind regards,
TheLuda (the poor guy who founded and created MaNGOS 11 years ago)

P.S: and to those possibly crying fake or something else, the team can check my forum email address. It is the original mangos address.

Hey Daniel!, Nice to see you again after you left MaNGOS.

In your opinion, if Nostalrius published the changes or merged them or whatever what would be left to work on in Vanilla?

Would it just be scalability? Like separating off zones as their own processes like they were working on? Do you think much else could really be done outside of that or would consider the project finally complete?

Does it happen with no addons installed?

To be fair, one of the big reasons Trinity split off of MaNGOS back in the day and so many people just kept their fixes to themeslves is because MaNGOS (sometimes) had ridiculous coding standards and attitude.
They just didn't bother accepting a lot of patches, because "nobody around to review" or "better ways to do it (then not actually doing it)".

That's why MaNGOS always has and always will SUCK ASS at playability. Shit tons of hackfixes everywhere, systems implemented half-assed or half-way. The average server doesn't change that, they just add more hackfixes in spell.cpp and that's it.

If someone REALLY wanted to make a difference, they would start with Vanilla/TBC (because the two are very similar) and write a core from scratch the way Crestfall-WoW or WoW-PP have claimed to do.

Actually that is only half the story. There were many personal differences behind this, and the coding style e.g. to this day is the same in Trinity... it was more a fight over power and fame in the community than about project management. I still have all the mails from back then, and I can assure you, the real world you seeking is bitch fight. That is what it was.

schaka wrote:That's why MaNGOS always has and always will SUCK ASS at playability.

For one, Nostalrius is MaNGOS. And 2nd, have you actually tried it? The differences between the vanilla MaNGOS version I have and Nostalrius are not that big actually, even in terms of playability. Much has changed within the last years.

And the funny part is, this is just a claim. Both projects are TrinityCore based with a few custom fixes.
