I'm pretty sure valkyrie/elysium is hosted by OVH in France (the very same host Nost used). They're not just big enough to bother blizz or maybe they use C&D notifications as toilet paper.

I'd go easy on the hype until Viper and the team makes an actual statement.

Blizzard giving the middle finger to their long time fans again. Blizzcon is the appropriate place to make this type of announcement and I got a feeling the classic server fan boys in attendance will let themselves be heard. Not even sure how this is a discussion, a classic server would help retain players during those long ass content droughts that still happen every expansion despite blizzard saying that they won't. It would bring back players that could potentially get interested in other blizzard games down the road as well. Not only that but it'd be giving a lot of players something they've been asking for pretty much for years now.

I absolutely don't agree that Blizzcon is the appropriate place to make this type of announcement.
I feel its counterproductive if anything, because the success of Legion is something they need to focus on keeping moving. Announcing Legacy at this time does almost nothing to help them. A vast majority of people in attendance will have no interest in that type of announcement, but the whole world is watching to see how they can carry on after the disaster that was WoD. Its important Blizzard focuses on this, because if they do not, it can officially kill their flagship IP.

The "long ass content drought" that I agree will still likely happen even with the new pacing efforts, is not for another year at least if not longer. They can easily announce something for that when the time comes. If Legacy turned on today, it would coincide with a pretty sizable patch. Its a bit silly for Blizzard to even consider it, frankly.

I doubt anyone would come back to Blizzard as a whole though. It MIGHT get people playing live wow again, but surely anyone who has seen Hearthstone or Overwatch and might enjoy them would play them regardless of WoW's Legacy status.

It certainly would give everyone here what they have been waiting for, but I think the best answer to that question is to let Nostalrius relaunch officially. Blizzard gives them the OK and that's that. I would prefer Blizzard's server stability and tech team to be involved, but their development team will no doubt iterate on it in a way that purists will despise and we will just be right back to this problem a few months later.

Best thing that can happen is Nostalrius gets their blessing and maybe some funding. I would LOVE to see the progressive server concept where we can move to TBC after Classic etc, and I know that would be a major undertaking without Blizzard's development.

They've announced plenty of other games at Blizzcon.... and in fact have pretty much done so since the whole thing began. Technically all of these games are competition for WoW because the player can choose to play those instead. The only difference here is that they'd still be announcing a version of wow and they'd still be making money from subscriptions.

The game has been a disaster without legacy servers numerous times in the past, so I don't think anyone honestly believes that if blizzard allocates a very small amount of it's resources to a legacy server, that it is somehow going to "sink the ship". In fact legacy servers stand to be one of the few things that can stop players from unsubbing during said content droughts.

Speaking of which, we generally see after 2 or 3 months of a new expansion, people begin to unsub. So that drought will take a lot less than a year to arrive. The only difference is a few months later, the game will have life again for a few months, and then revert back to drought status.... until the final tier of Legion, where we will see another year long drought again.

As for players coming back to blizzard games, it only makes sense. All they do nowadays is advertise their other games lol. WoW has lost tens of millions of players over the years due to a variety of reason.... suddenly if a lot of those people had a chance to play their favorite version again, they'd be interested. From there it makes sense that some of them would be checking out the other games as well. At the very least, the free stuff like Hots.

I'm all for the re-launch of Nostalrius with or without blizzard as well, but at the same time, if blizzard can do classic servers right, they deserve a shot. They've seen the template that is successful and have spoken to the very team behind it. But blizzard being involved and possibly "screwing up" classic servers is a possibility, but it's no where near as bad as the status quo of just not doing it while also shutting Nostalrius down.
