TBC ASAP or Follow the Timeline Debate

by Novin » Mon Feb 29, 2016 4:57 pm

(This debate is independent from the fact what a realistic release of the TBC realm might be.)

So i have been reading the comments about the Nostalrius TBC project and noticed a trend (like most of you probably did). On one hand there are people who want TBC ASAP, on the other hand there are those who would like to see the timeline finish without a new TBC realm.

Population: There are way too many people on the pvp realm atm. If you release TBC when everyone is done with vanilla content and ready to go to TBC, we will have 12k players in Hellfire Peninsula, it will be unplayable, and vanilla will be mostly empty. We will just face server issues with an unstable new realm(again). It might be a good thing for the tbc server to slowly steal players away, thus reducing lagg and server issues on vanilla.
Content: There is no point to force others who aren't interested in vanilla content to wait around 10-12 months if the realm is ready before that. Even if half the vanilla pvp realm leaves (which is highly unlikely). You will still have twice the normal blizzzlike playerbase to finish content. Even if the TBC realm releases early, when you finish naxxramas, the tbc realm would be still at gruul/karazhan/early SSC, it would be fairly easy to catch up.

It's clear that Nostalrius has a timeline which we should follow, however there are good reasons to launch an early TBC realm!
Upon reading the comments i didn't understand why people are so against an early release...
A suggestion to solve the headstart issue:
One possiblity would be to simply allow the character copy option when the official pvp vanilla timeline is finished. Until then who wishes to join the TBC early, would have to start a fresh character.

Having such an early PTR is very promising!
I posted this somewhere before, but there were no threads about this so DISCUSS!
Thanks.

I doubt it's going to be released earlier than one year from now, let's be realistic. So I don't see much reason to worry about it interfering with the vanilla timeline.

I think you greatly underestimate exactly how broken the TBC realm probably will be. It's going to require a lot of man hours to find the critical bugs, minor bugs, and so forth. However, it should be easier to do so since there are far more resources at our disposal oppose to having to dig through the depths of the internet for vanilla fixes.

It's good that the PTR will be available for all of this to start now opposed to later when Naxx is finished up on the vanilla project.

But on the other hand: I am pretty sure Nostalrius releases before CoreCraft. Still >1 year from now ...

I'm fairly confident that they will follow the timeline as closely as possible, to cater to those who originally rolled on this server. Those of us who didn't get a chance to experience vanilla form start to finish back in retail. My guild at the time only got to clear Spider, Plague, and Abom wings before TBC was announced. I would like to have that ecperience again, untainted with TBC on the horizon. The fact that the devs are wanting to build a completely seperate server for TBC and leave NostBegins as a time capsule of 1.12 WoW, and giving the player base an opportunity to copy their toons over, is the best of both worlds.

The road will be bumpy. I forsee many bugs and errors along the way. But with a realistic "retail blizz-like" timeline and the 2nd server cluster for TBC, I am really looking forward to a fantastic and enjoyable ride.

The difference would be that on retail you had to upgrade to TBC and everyone else had to as well. In this case, even if the TBC realm would release this minute, you wouldn't have to upgrade, you are not forced to play TBC. With a healthy playerbase left on vanilla you could easily finish Naxxramas and start the TBC later, or wait for a 2nd TBC realm.

Okay, time to clarify few things again since there seem to be many questions.

1. "Can I change faction, name, class, appearance during the switch from vanilla to tbc?"

No. We have no plans on allowing anything like this and it would be a massive extra workload that would have to be done ostly manually.

2. "Will there be both PVP and PVE tbc realms? Can I move a character from vanilla PVE to tbc PVP?"

Unknown at this time. No details regarding this have been decided. If you want to be super-duper extra sure, level a character you want to play on the tbc PVP realm to 60 on the current PVP realm. But really, this is all up in the air.

3. "Don't release TBC yet! Release TBC asap!"

This announcement just marks the official beginning for the Nostalrius TBC project. The TBC realm will not be available for a significant time. Any speculation on a release date is pointless at this time.

4. "Why are you doing TBC when vanilla has bugs/lag/personal pet peeve"

Separate teams. This announcement was also made to recruit more people to help with the project. The existing team will focus on vanilla content, just as Viper stated, and the new TBC team will on the TBC content.

Hope this helps.

The GM team.

Quality scripting takes time, if you're not offering to volunteer why do you think your opinion about the release date matters?

It doesn't.
That's why: "(This debate is independent from the fact what a realistic release of the TBC realm might be.)"

The question is what advantages or disadvantages are to releasing the TBC realm early.

But the debate has no impact aynways because:

"3. "Don't release TBC yet! Release TBC asap!"

Early TBC release would break the majority of raiding guilds. HF maintaining a workable roster when you get 10 (20? 30?) people quitting on a single day and moving on to TBC.

Incidentally it would also lure some of the Asian farmers out. Can't say it's worth the price though.
