Petition to legalize Nost.

by Uzephi » Sat Apr 09, 2016 12:22 am

What do I mean? Non-Profit Organizations who come about (like archive.org) are able to archive past games that don't need server emulation to preserve a game so it doesn't get lost in time. This was Nostalrius's mission. To let people relive the Warcraft MMO we all came to love. 10 years from now when my kids are in their teens, I want them to relive this game in it's purest form, not the watered down, dead version Blizzard would release that year.

This petition isn't just for Vanilla wow or Blizzard games. It expresses every game that requires a server to emulate the aspect of the game no longer supported. So, don't keep it within our community. Spread the word.

Some comments from the petition:
I don't want to have to tell stories of an older version of a once great game. I want other people to personally experience it.

This makes sense.

These old games, of which has been repeatedly stated that access would not be granted by the copyright owner, should be kept alive.

This needs to happen. Entire communities die off when online games go offline.

Petitions don't do anything but give a company more toilet paper. They aren't obligated in any way to do it, no matter how many silly signatures you get on it. They already know people want to play Classic WoW. They saw Nost's population. You're telling them nothing new. They already decided to shut it down. Any game with private servers is infringement, even if the official publisher has abandoned it. They do not care at all that it's no longer accessible. They even go as far as to try to prevent you from having it from other sources, as shown by the takedown.

This isn't a petition to Blizzard. This petition is actually to the Library of Congress to the desk of the person in charge of Digital Copyrights and DMCA. There is current clauses in DMCA for fair use to allow non-profits legally able to reproduce abandon-ware. The clause doesn't specify server emulation though. This petition is to modify the clause to allow server emulation of abandon-ware. Nice of you both to not read anything on the linked page and just assume instead of actually looking at it.

That'll be an even harder sell.

The person who made this petition actually made it well. You can see his links and sources for them to actually know this should be added. The only foothold Blizzard has is because the clause doesn't specify server emulation on abandon-ware. All the current clause needs is an update for new times.

EX: Look how often the DMCA has to be revised to catch up with the times. That is all this petition is for, to update it and revise for newer technologies, like server emulation.
