Disagree that cataclysm is when 'shit started falling apart'
WotLK introduced multiple difficulty raids, raped the tanking model- effectively turning most tanks into 'stand here, push aoe threat button, try not to choke on paint chips', and turned 5 man content into faceroll garbage up until the ICC 5 mans(occulus was never hard people just couldnt adapt)
Basically, WotLK was the begining of easy mode wow and a precursor to LFR and many of the bad things that happened came with Cata. Im not saying WotLK was bad, just that blaming Cata for all of wow's problems might be focusing a little bit too much on jet fuel melting steel beams, and not enough on why/how did someone fly a plane into a building.
As for Blizzard's poll, I dont think its because theyre using it to test the waters of 'do people want old content' but more of 'whats your favorite boss from this old content that everyone hated. Because everyone hated old content. Remember how much you dislike Cata? Thats because old wow sucked, just incase you forgot' Because the current wow audience theyve groomed is simply far more profitable than us.
If you released a cash shop in vanilla/bc people would have boycotted. Now, they can literally sell gold and noone bats an eye.
In vanilla/bc Blizzard scrambled to make content and/or find ways to keep people engaged and playing wow because thats how you retained subs and made profit. Now, you can go a year without any content and people will stay subbed so they can login once a day and click their thing to make alot of gold. And if theyre bored, will probably just buy another blizzard game that is strategically released at the low point of content.
We are the MMO audience WoW was made for. Somewhere along the way, Blizzard's marketting team realized there was a far more stupid and profitable demographic that plays wow, and they didnt need us.
