A suggestion from the MaNGOS founder

Greetings,

I have been watching the whole shutdown discussion for a while, and would like to weigh in with a few things. First, let me introduce myself.

I am TheLuda, the guy who founded the MaNGOS project on which Nostalrius core and database are based back in 2005 and have thus have seen quite some shit in the scene.

So, after reading the announcement from Nostalrius about shutting down and probably releasing their changes to MaNGOS, I would like to suggest this:

Simply release the sources on Github.

Here is why:

  • it would make Nostalrius the first vanilla server project that actually contributes back to the original core in 11 years of project existence.
  • it would show you actually are really true about the vanilla community,
  • and it would be the first time a private server does not just leech from the original project and the works of thousands of people who never receive money, gratitude or anything else.
Thus, Nostalrius team, do this and prove you really care about the community, do something honest, honorable which never has been done before in the history of the whole vanilla scene.

Also, keep the database of player data. Or hand it over to a successor. Releasing it would be illegal.

With kind regards,
TheLuda (the poor guy who founded and created MaNGOS 11 years ago)

P.S: and to those possibly crying fake or something else, the team can check my forum email address. It is the original mangos address.

Obvious scam is obvious. I'm pretty sure that the founder of MaNGOS wouldn't have a standard account.

Want to bet? Send a mail with a random text to [email protected] and I will quote it.

Why would I have any special forum account? That is bullshit.

I've read people saying the Nost team said they will release their source.

I don't think I've read it myself, so I can't say.

It is nuts that every private server has to put in the same n years of work to get the available server source code into a state where it's Vanilla-like.

(And why oh why did you use C++? ahhhhhhhhh! ahhhhhhhhhhh!!! Irradiated Horror!! ahhhhhhhhh!)

Hey man, just wanted to thank you (and the team) for years of entertainment. I basically grew up on private servers when I couldn't play retail. And when I finally got the capability to pay for it myself, retail turns into unplayable shit :(

Hope Nostalrius does this for you guys---I mean---everyone.

I don't have a reason to doubt you, in fact I made the exact same suggestion on the megathread on mmo-champion a couple days ago.

It would be great to see a derivative work honoring the GPL.

Off-topic: This community was really something special with the game itself providing structure and direction to its energy.
It was also great at how it handled the shutdown for the most part.

Since that time it has turned to pure entropy, everyone is attacking everyone and everything.
I give it a week more before it turns to complete shit.

They said they'll open source their work on the announcement that's still on the front page of Nostalrius website.
Where every dick and harry gets that sense of entitlement and ownership is beyond me.
Today is also the day where Nostalrius will start being community-driven in the truest sense of the word, as we will be releasing the source code, and anonymized players data (encrypting personal account data), so the community as a whole will decide the form of the future of Nostalrius. We will still be there in the background if you want us to, but will no longer take the lead.

That is the exact quote verbatim.

It is written by the team in their official shutdown announcement on the main page.

Because all of us initial developers were using Linux, and later expanded to Windows, and Mac OS.

Current core runs almost everywhere, and also can hold thousand of players.

If I would have to do it all over, I would probably use Go programming language.

IMHO it would make Nostalrius unique. Hundreds of servers have played this shutdown game, and so far none honored the license.

It is the reason why I stopped my work in the end. Everyone made cash and fame from my work, but was to big a shit to give even the tiniest bit back.
