Why do private servers....

So often rely on "instant level x" "super xp boost" "get starter gear here!"?

One of the biggest problems that retail WoW has right now, is the complete bastardization of all, but the end-game, content. Noticing the amount of private servers that offer these features, I wonder then, what's the point of running a previous version of the game if just to follow the same moronic philosophy "game begins at sexteh/seventeh" ? Reminds me of people who run away from something just to continue doing the same thing they supposedly disliked in the first place.

Although classic servers seem to have this on occasion as well, I'm specially noticing this when it comes to Burning Crusade projects. Whether it's the instant level 60 of PlayTBC, or the super-fast megaquest to get to level 58 in 2 hours for Corecraft, everyone seems to share that moronic idea that 80%+ of the world should be skipped for the sake of convenience; completely glossing over the fact that if you were to start a draenei or blood elf at the beginning of said expansion you'd face the regular 1x classic world, just as any player who bought the game at that point would.

What's the point then?
"We dislike retail, we run out of things to do after a couple months. I know! create a former version of the game but put as max level so we can run out of things to do in a couple months, that'll be different, yeah, good call dude".

Having 0 self awareness and living in a bubble.

Agreed although I think in the case of (some) TBC servers it may be that the vanilla content is not really worked on and stays buggy af. Might be wrong. But yeah I don't care for it either.

True. Corecraft itself says they've not spent any time fixing Azeroth's areas, scripted quests, etc. Yet, they proceed to say "we might release a vanilla server later, fix it and then patch it to the TBC server", which is a pretty amazing exercise of going against common sense. After everyone goes super blitz to 70 and farms blue/purple gear, what will fixing the content that was glossed over achieve?

If anything, this proves that Nostalrius had the right idea all along: If you're going to do emulation over videogames, work on the starter and basic game before moving on to patched content (expacs being super patches when it comes down to it) so you have a solid foundation.

The only way to do development in my eyes. Vanilla dev is dead... We have had basicllyy the same server code for 5+ years with minor fixes. I remember using ascent server and it seemed just as good as the current 1.12.1 servers but that was like 2009.

With regards to the private server scene, if I want to enjoy Vanilla content, I would play on a Vanilla server. If I want to play TBC content, I'd prefer just starting at 60. Ideally, we'd have a system like Nost was proposing...enjoy the 60 experience and THEN copy and paste your 60 to a TBC realm.

That's why something like the Crestfall project is exciting on paper, where they will enable expansion progression for your toon starting with Vanilla. I'd love to redo the journey from the ground floor, but not repeat the first part of the journey multiple times if a private server doesn't enable progression through the expansions for a particular toon.

That's the interesting thing about the Crestfall project. They aren't using Mangos. They are building their own core for Vanilla that works well for the other expansions. Definitely will keep an eye on those guys.

A lot of places that offer that type of treatmeant because the private server community is used to freebies.

True blizzlike realms are rare. ;)
