Will greed win in the end?

by Wryshu » Sun Apr 17, 2016 4:28 pm

We heard it loud and clear when the Nostalrius team pulled the plug, "We will release the source code."

Then, after lots of publicity, we hear, "We may release the source code."

Why the "may?" Just release it.

The code should have been open source all along. It's Mangos with lot's of fixes, but still Mangos, taken from a community of developers and fans who worked just as hard and long as the Nostalrius team did. The community deserves the code.

It's been the same with almost every successful vanilla server, make lots of fixes to mangos, profit, give nothing back.

If Blizzard ends up hiring some of the Nostalrius team and they horde the code, then it seems the plan all along was for the Nostalrius team to profit, and once again the mangos community gets left in the cold.

The code should have already been released back to the community from which it was taken in the first place.

As other sins grow old, greed remains young.

..So you haven't read the announcement? Source will be released, but without the additional mods / programs for hack / cheat & gold selling detection. (Which I personally think is best too).

So what's your problem? An angry kronos dev feeling bad 'cause not getting hack detection tools?

Okay, so it's allways Paragon vs Method vs some-unknown-guild on every tier.
Why not make things a bit more interesting, and make them ALL raid Vanilla instead?

With the statements on the home page I agree. They could keep the server files but it would kill the rep of nostalrius. They would need to start a new server if they don't plan on releasing the files as intended. If they just let everything die I think that's really messed up.

if they release the code for the hack detection etc to the public then it pretty much makes it worthless anyway, as anyone would be able to see how to exploit it.

No one's asking for the hack prevention or gold farmer/spammer swatters. The mangos community just wants the source for realmd and mangosd, along with improvements.

Read carefully, they changed the language to "may." In other words, they went from promising the source to saying they might possibly release it. It sounds a lot like they may be planing to back out. It's kind of like when Isildur had the chance to destroy the ring of power and backed out at the last second, only to be killed by it later.

Just toss the source code back to the community this time.

Greed is good, and there will be a vanilla server back
Either its going to be F2P cause they do not want their reputation damaged or they will host it them selfs to earn money of it. Either way if we keep backing this project, someway in the future we will have Vanilla wow back.
it might not be as great as Nostalrius but we will have it.
