Paid for a game we can't play.

I'm sure 99% of the people playing on Nost bought wow 10 years ago, thats why we're here. The way I see it we should be able to play a game we paid for. Whether it was 10 days ago or 10 years ago. If Blizz made it that in order to play vanilla wow you had to be up to date with the current expansion and have your monthly sub up it wouldn't bother me at all. It would be great if they reviewed their stance on legacy servers. Could be a money maker for them.

I think that's the way to go, that you have to stay up to date with the current expansion in order to access legacy servers and I think it's fair, and you open the door for people to switch between the two which again can lead to a higher activity on the retail version. I personally love playing retail when a new expansion comes out. Not because I really like the state the game is at, but I usually really enjoy the leveling experience in new zones as well as testing new stuff. But the past two expansions has usually ended for me after a month or two.

They still host Warcraft 3, which was out before WoW, and doesn't even charge a sub. It's more supported than every patch of WoW beyond the newest one. It probably still has its forum too.

It used to be that you couldn't access the new content/zones/professions/whatever until you had actually bought the expansion, and added the code to your account. For example, I didn't buy TBC right away (received it as a gift a few weeks after launch) but I was an active player in Azeroth, I just couldn't go through the Dark Portal. I'm not sure how they handled Cata, I think those people who stayed with LK were either stuck in Northrend (not a bad place to be stuck, honestly) or they couldn't get in at all.
I know they started selling the first few expansions bundled together for $10 or so. I quit retail a while ago so I have no idea how they handle this today...

Not true.
This model only applied up to wotlk. Till then, you had to individually buy classic, TBC and wotlk separately, and the prices hadn't really decreased too much.
When Cataclysm launched, every account could travel through the redone Eastern Kingdoms/Kalimdor, regardless if they hadn't bought any expansion. Not having the expansion only locked you out of reaching level 85, or using places locked behind a loading screen (think Maelstrom).

I like the way my friend "plays" retail: She once bought wow, but doesn't bother paying subscription. Instead, she always waits for a new expansion to come out, at which point Blizzard gives you access to the just-dethroned xpac as well as a few weeks of game time (this happens once or twice through the year as a promo). She's preparing to play WoD in September :D.

My first experience of wow was vanilla on Emerald Dream in 2013. Leveled a hunter to 60. Then I bought retail to try it out and got to 90 and while it was also fun in a way, it didn't feel the same as vanilla. It felt quite lonely on retail. It was very single playery and basically no social contact. What's worse is because it requires no effort, you get utter noobs in higher level places who don't know how the mechanics work. Whereas there's a point where if you play vanilla you cannot be a noob once you hit a certain level because it requires knowing your role.

Vanilla felt like I worked for everything but retail felt like everything was handed to me and it wasn't very fulfilling.
