A question about one of the "other guys"

So while I lobby with Nostalrius supporters for Legacy servers I am passing the time on another vanilla server. I only started playing WoW retail just before the launch of TBC, so there are some things that I may think are vanilla when they in fact aren't. On this one server I am completing quests for the Darnassus faction and getting very low reputation for them. On Nost and from the information provided on Vanilla db sites I get 350 reputation. But on this server I get 150 for Darnassus, and then 37 rep for SW, IF and Gnomer!

I asked about this on their forums, and they said that those numbers are true blizzlike, as most other private servers get there numbers from reverse engineering TBC. Is this true? Because on Nost if I dedicated myself to completing all the faction quests at the appropriate level I could usually hit exalted between 40-50 or at least get very close. Here I am going to struggle breaking into revered. So what is the story?

They are wrong. Reputation gains were changed first in the TBC, to make it possible to achieve high reputation levels even at level 70. I do not know if they were changed in later expansions further - that is possible.

But in vanilla, quest could give you faction-wide reputation (a fairly small number of high level quests) or one specific reputation only (every other quest). The amount of reputation gained depended on whether the quest was red/orange/yellow or green or grey. This meant that if you wanted to hit exalted with another capital without turning in massive amounts of cloth - or doing it before the cloth quests were implemented - you needed to do all the possible quests for that capital on the appropriate level. This wasn't that much of an issue in vanilla because it eventually was possible to maximize reputation with all capitals thanks to the cloth quests and the repeatedly quests for Timbermaw Hold, Cenarion Circle, Thorium Brotherhood, Argent Dawn and Brood of Nozdormu are (largely) still yellow at level 60, putting all players on an equal footing (except humans with their +10% rep gain). But when TBC came and the level cap was increased 70, those quests would now be grey and getting sufficient reputation so as to be able to obtain all the various items became impossible. I believe this is the reasoning why reputation gain was "normalized" (I think it was patch 2.3 - the one that changed most elite mobs to normal ones in Azeroth and increased XP gain), ie all quests give the same amount of reputation regardless of their "colour". However, most quests still only gave reputation with one faction only, with the aforementioned few quests being exceptions giving Horde/Alliance wide reputation.

To my knowledge, what you describe, is either a custom change or something that Blizzard introduced later.
