I understand the risks with private servers and the possibility of them being gone at any moment. My guild was hopeful for the character data to be released so we could continue elsewhere. I'm disappointed because we're fragmented across many servers or have just stopped altogether. The motivation is entirely low because so many of us were anticipating the content releases.
It's nearly impossible to get people to commit to another project when having to start completely over. I get it and understand that's how these servers go sometimes. I could understand the reasons for not releasing the server core but why not the character data?
What does
character data from Nostalrius have to do with Blizzard discussion? The announcement from May 1st doesn't even really address this and mainly discusses the server core.

Regarding player related data, we settled on a strong algorithm to ensure data privacy for everyone. According to European laws, and foremost to our policy of privacy and personal data protection, you will have to explicitly choose to have your personal information included on the public data release if you wish so.

A second important point is that keeping the sources private could be useful at some point during the discussion with Blizzard.
If this is related, how does keeping character data private have use for discussion with Blizzard? The server core is understandable but it should be left up to us individually if we want our accounts to be part of a public release. Please rethink this Administrators.
