Nostalrius Begins - Quality wow vanilla realm (1.12)

For those that don't know, Nostalrius was a private Vanilla WoW server that got shut down, which caused them to become basically the gold standard and voice for the Legacy server community.

They stated that if Blizzard didn't address Legacy servers at Blizzcon, they would, and they have, this is that announcement: http://forum.nostalrius.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=44550.

TL;DR=they're giving the source code to Elysium (another private server) and plan on releasing it to the public at a later date.

From my perspective, this is not the right way.

The Nostalrius "brand" carries weight and value. People want to play on Nostalrius, not Elysium. If Elysium plans to use the source code, they should create a new server for the source code and call it Nostalrius 2 or preferably just Nostalrius.

Baking the source code from Nostalrius into their existing servers (I'm not a coding expert, or even a novice, I don't know what the process is at all, this is hypothetical) will kill the hype of the transition. A "reopening" of Nostalrius from the beginning of the Vanilla cycle would generate WAY more hype than just giving an existing server the code.

Releasing the code to the public I also think is a huge mistake. If Nostalrius wants to honor their core values about being non-profit etc, releasing the code to the public will release it to people who want to use it for profit, compromising not only the Nostalrius values but also the community as a whole.

The more servers that are out there, the more fragmented the community is. The fewer servers there are, the stronger the community is. Having 10 different servers with 10k players is much weaker than having 1 server with 100k players.

One of the reasons why Nostalrius had such a strong voice was because so many people gave it to them. Dispersing the Legacy community by releasing the code weakens the collective bargaining power that the Legacy community has and reduces the chance that they can compel Blizzard to create Legacy servers.

My end goal is for Blizzard to create official Legacy servers, I feel that this direction works against that goal.

Asmongold doesn't understand the code needs to be released. The legacy community has no bargaining power with the totalitarian that is Blizzard. Blizzard was given the ball and they dropped it, kicked it, spit on it and pissed on it for good measure. When the code hits the general Legacy populace people will be able to pickup on 6 years of work and drive the project further. Will servers pop up left and right, yes but guess what servers pop up left and right now.

If Asmongolds idiotic stance was applied to Mangos, NO ONE WOULD'VE EVER PLAYED LEGACY outside of the original Mangos server. Asmongold falls to see how this started and Nost releasing the code will be the new mangos stock server setup, the community as a whole will start lightyears ahead of where it once started. Meaning quality stock servers will pop up and yes the community will be deluded but more players will participate as a whole. More people will engage vanilla and perhaps only than will Blizzard be forced to deal. If Nost couldn't effect change perhaps more servers can.

Asmongold is a nice guy and I'd like to have a beer with the dude, but he makes a living (however grand or meager) off a Blizzard product. Everything he says needs to be seen through that lens and then evaluated from there. Just remember guys, Tradechat (AKA PANSER) was an active NOST and KERN troll during the shutodwn. Now she is a presenter at Blizzcon and probably got paid a modest sum to attend as well as other perks. Perhaps she was a proxy and for her willingness to flame she got a nice seat at the table. Just put things into perspective.

I also disagree. Althought to an extend I agree he fail to see the main reason for code release... private servers are still illegal, they are still subject of CnD and people that run those servers are/might be rightfully scared to ignore those letters. If source is in hand of 1 entity its easy to identify as threat and taken down (via CnD, direct lawsuits and other attacks) which hinders the overall development of private vanilla scene.

I agree that some might try to use it to make shit servers to generate money but its up to people what they want to spend money on... if they want to spend money on shit its their own will.

But as far as development / educational reasons have priority its a good move.

Of course they do, they are eager to re-level and grind out all the stuff they never did. Those that have grinded can get fucked I guess. Though if I got it right, Elysium is going to merge and the Nost database of toons as well as create fresh NOST server. So people can reroll and the toons will be saved too. I could be wrong though.

You should visit Greece.

First of all, INDYMEDIA.GR as well as the various websites/webpages of the local Greek Anarchist/Terrorist scene, all run off Greek Govt. servers from the University of Athens.

The Anarchists aka Anarcho-Communists or Anarcho-Terrorists

live in a whole quarter in the city of Athens called EXARCHEIA, which is, for all intends and purposes, an independent Anarcho-Communist Commune.

These guys are completely independent. They live in Communes, they use drugs freely, and they steal power from the Greek Govt. grid. The Greek Police does not dare to enter the Anarchist Quarter. When they do, they use about a Battalion of specially trained Riot Police. Every time they do that, there are widespread riots by the Anarcho-Communists that always end with a few police officers ending up in hospitals badly injured.

They have been responsible for a host of terrorist acts, including burning alive some bank workers, including what has been the biggest riot in the history of Greece which happened in 2012 and almost managed to remove the then Greek Govt from power.

Recently, they have set up a "Militia" armed with AK-47 assault rifles which they paraded in the streets of Exarcheia with the Police not daring to intervene.

Private WoW servers could be hosted there or in similar areas in Eastern Europe and any Government would be completely unable to shut them down, much less any pencil-pushers aka lawyers. You have no idea about how the real world works.

totally ageed, the source code should go only for Elysium and that's it. No need to fragment the community to pieces, especially since there are tons of servers who make profit from it.

I have mixed feelings about the source code distribution. In the short-term, it might be better if only one project has the best source code. However, in that case you're making a bet that the Elysium team will maintain the codebase better than anyone else would who might have the code.

It's possible that 2-3 years down the line another team might have done a lot more with the code than Elysium could. So giving the code to only one server is an all-eggs-in-one-basket scenario.
